When reflecting on our current word, bliss, photographer Yvette Casillas Hall had this to say: "I love the opportunity to take a road trip and make a weekend getaway. My road to bliss ends at the beach, where the sound of the crashing waves, beautiful sunsets, and a sense of calmness merge with our very complicated lives."

Bliss Submissions by Yvette Casillas Hall
Ollie by Lisa Haney
"I'm contributing this photo of my older dog, Ollie. I find blissful states in both my dogs, more than I seem to find myself! This photo reminds me of the bliss to be found in my home, despite all the deadlines and challenges with MY every-day ..." says Lisa Haney about her photograph. (Doesn't Ollie look blissful?)

Kitty Heaven by Sarah Mattingly

I love this photograph by my dear friend Sarah Mattingly. Like Brad and me, she and her husband Matt have a couple of furry, four-legged children. Sarah writes "Look at big, fat Furgus.....he is in kitty heaven!"
Gee, it's just too bad he can't relax!

Poopsmith's Boots by Dolly Salazar
Codie is a Pinhead by Dolly Salazar

I got a good chuckle out of the titles to Dolly's latest submissions. This first one is from 2007. "Bliss is everyone in the pack doubled over in convulsions, laughing loud and hard at something un-pc and kinda rude, while strangers turn and frown at the intrusion on their daily grind. More people should embrace the silly." (Boy, Dolly, do I remember "embracing the silly" when we were first starting out at KPCC all those years ago!)
Details on the photo: Gelatin silver print, Ilford Deltal 400 35 mm film.

Bliss Submissions
by Laurie-Jean Sennott

Up and Away (c) Laurie-Jean Sennott
Commenting on her "Bliss" submissions, Laurie-Jean writes "The first one [which] I'll title a cheesy Up, up and away was taken this past weekend at the Reno Hot Air Balloon Races. I can only imagine at this point what a peaceful, serene blissful ride this must be. Someday, I'll have my turn in the basket. It was a day that was worth getting up at 3:00AM to capture all the days festivities!!"
Autumn Friends of Delafield (c) Laurie-Jean Sennott
"The second image, Autumn Friends of Delafield was taken last year in Delafield, WI. These 'friends' always bring a smile not just to my face, but through my core. Perfect happiness - pure bliss."
(Keep the submissions coming, everyone. I just love the images that I have been receiving!!)
The Color of a Whisper
by Helen Bascom
The Color of a Whisper (c) Helen Bascom
Helen writes "I shot this yesterday right after a gentle rain. The air was so cool after days of oppressive humid heat.
"I think I'm hooked on your site." :-)
(Well, I love hearing that, Helen -- I am hooked on the wonderful work that everyone has been sending!!)
You can see more of Helen's works at Bascom Digital Art and on her Active Art site. Check them both out!

The new word has been selected ...

"When you follow your bliss... doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else." -- Joseph Campbell (1904 - 1987)
Our new word is "Bliss." How do you define bliss? For some people it might be curling up with a good book on a rainy day, while others may define bliss as long hike on a bright summer day. What does bliss mean to you? Create one or two (or three?) photographs that represent your poetic definition of the word "bliss" and send them to me on or before Friday, September 26th.
So, take some time to follow your bliss -- and be sure to show us what that means to you!
